Dianella caerulea "Cassa Blue", Blue Flax Lily
This plant of the week has a stunning gray/blue color that is the perfect contrast to some of your more “boring” green shrubs. Dianella caerulea “Cassa Blue” has soft blue foliage which gets to be about 1-2’ and its blue flowers that bloom in the spring are about 1’ taller than that. The dianella in my garden gets morning sun and afternoon shade and it is also pretty adapt to partial sun/shade. It tolerates a wide variety of soils (sandy to clay soils) and takes occasional irrigation or can be more regular if you have it near higher water needy plants. This plant is more clumping-like and doesn’t spread fast by rhizomes…although I am going to have to remove some of the spread after about 2 years of growth in my garden. I love to use this plant in many types of gardens, it is very versatile… In a mass it can look very dramatic and it plays well with other taller plants as a nice foreground feature. Do you have this flax lily in your yard? Let me know!
