Passion Fruit, Passiflora edulis

Passion fruit is a tropical, delicious fruit often featured in many Great British Baking Show desserts… (it’s a good bake!) It is also a vine with drop dead flowers that look surreal and happen to grow in San Diego. Passion fruit vines like full sun (or part sun if you are in a dry/hot climate), a little humidity and need a trellis or fence to climb on. Because this is a tropical/subtropical plant it is not a drought friendly plant; it needs water! The passion fruit vine is extremely fast growing but has been noted to be short lived. It can be pruned in the spring in California. The purple variety does the best in California and the yellow variety tends to be more tropical and would probably do better in a more tropical area like Florida. I love seeing these flowers around walks in my neighborhood.
